Core or Extended?

“Oh no ‘Cher..’ Why CORE?”

To those whom I recommended to take Extended, I wish you all the BEST! But to those whom I recommended to take the Core paper but are reluctant to accept it, you will have to consider the following;

1) College Entrances:

Most college entrance programs (Pre-U or Diplomas) will only require that you have at least 5 credits. The strictest of programs that you might see is the IBDP in Taylor’s which would require the same 5 credits but require Strong English. With your Core paper, you can comfortably secure your credit and perhaps put more energy into preparing for other papers.

Some links to help you out:

Monash Foundation Year

Taylor’s (CPU / A-Levels)

UCSI - Science Foundation - Even a science foundation course would only require 5 credits

Additional Info from Study Malaysia

2) Scholarships:

Of course if you are aiming for a scholarship, you will be required to score higher to impress the person who is willing to offer you the scholarship. Even with some credits and some As, there will still be offers open to you. Corporate scholarships are abundant out there and you just need to know where to find them. It is in most large businesses and conglomerates to have scholarship programs as part of their CSR (Corporate-Social Responsibility) activities.

Results are not everything. The reason why we focus on helping you present yourselves better in our school is fundamentally because we know that scholarship awards are not focused on just your test scores but also your personality and showmanship. The INTERVIEW is the one that really helps to determine the recipient of the scholarship awards.

The idea is to focus on your strengths. If you don’t think that you can do well in a certain subject, take the milder alternative to help secure a credit and focus more on where you are better. In saying this, I’m not advising to neglect the CORE papers and not study for them.

I hope these few words would give you some encouragement. At the end of the day, the decision still lies with you and your family.

All the BEST to all!

Recommendations are based on past performances, class activities and test paper 2 2011 that has just been taken.
